“Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, Off to the Vet I go-“

One of the kittens now has an eye flare up and it looks like it might be the beginning of either feline herpesvirus or cherry eye. Cherry eye is pretty rare in kitties. Also Lionel the kitten who I was told two months ago would need his eye removed is having eye issues. I like my vet, I truly do. I just wish I could stop going to see him every three days. It’s getting to be the matter of just taking my sleeping bag and rolling it out in the lobby and sleeping there.

4:30 update: Turns out Wink’s third eyelid has been torn almost in half on one side. They are keeping her until Monday when they will go in and either repair the damage, or cut the third eyelid and shorten it. The fear about bringing her back here is with it just dangling out in the open, another kitten could get ahold of it and do further damage.

Lionel has a bad case of conjunctivitis and has some drops he needs in his eyes three times a day because it is so angry. While I was there picking up Lionel, a woman came in and donated 6 bags of dry kitten food to the sanctuary! I will just have to add water to the dry food because we only netted 9 cans of food this week. Nine into thirty-two doesn’t go very far. 🙂

  1. With so many cats in your care, there must be many who need medical care at any given time. A revolving door at the vet’s office, unfortunately.

  2. My kitten has the same thing. Unfortunately we cannot take him to the vet se we are trying to treat him at home. Sense we can’t get a surgery to shorten or repair it is it just going to always be poking out? I feel so bad for him. My kitten one morning scratched his own eye. We have just been keeping it clean using Cat eye ointment. It certainly looks gross but he hasn’t been crying about it in pain or anything.

  3. Lylah,
I would certainly encourage you to inquire about different programs, set up to help pet owners care for their animals at a reduced cost? You can find out about these programs online. I know there are several that used to exist prior to Covid. I also know that since Covid has arrived, some of these programs can no longer stay afloat. Do a Google search in your area and find out what is available to you. Regardless, if you think your kitty isn’t in pain. I can almost assure you that he is. Cats are so good and even kittens learn that showing weakness means they end up as lunch. They can mask so much pain without our awareness. I hope you do take my suggestion and I hope you can find help.
