In late June, I received a phone call from a gal who had adopted from me in the past. Her and her husband had been “junking” and in a near abandoned scrapyard, she discovered (after hearing faint meows) a little black kitty who had been stuffed into a letter box and left for dead!
When Reese arrived, she was in poor shape and terrified of people. Even when confined in the cage she would try to burrow her way out of my reach in the litter pan. It was quite sad.
Once her URI cleared and her other health issues were addressed, she was spayed and let out in general population. She would run in terror every time I went into the enclosure and I would only be able to observe her from afar.
This morning as I was feeding, she pranced up to me as pretty as a picture and demanded I pet her! We had a wonderful pet-fest and she has reconciled in her mind now that not humans are out to get her. By letting her just be herself in the group and not demanding she allow me to touch or pet her, she understands now the pressure is off. I do admit to wearing a wide smile this morning as she followed me around as I fed the cats and scooped litter pans.
Here she is relaxed and waiting for what is next which I HOPE is a good, loving home for her!
She’s gorgeous 🙂 Always incredible to hear about how cats who were so misstreated, or left to die can bounce back from it. And have a restored bond of love and friendship with humans, as oppose to seeing us as something that equals pain and deaths!
It is indeed quite a transformation. I had to deal with a very timid cat of my own, though he wasn’t anywhere near as bad as Reese was when she came to you. But it’s a good feeling to know that you’ve bettered another living creature’s life, isn’t it?

Beautiful!!!!! I’m having a problem with my 4 yr old female cat, Mercedes. She has been losing hair since January. Took her to vet once was told she may have parasite or fleas. She’s indoor cat and if there were fleas in the house, I would get attacked as well. The past few days she has been laying in the cat litter box. Last night she started acting crazed. Don’t know what is going on with her. I really have no money to speak of to even take her to the vet today but I have to see what is going on with her. She’ll be lying next to me and out of the blue, she jumps up on a table starts grooming excessively and comes back to lay down. If you have any suggestions, please let me know as I’m quite worried about my baby girl. No throwing up, no diarrhea, eating well, etc.
Joann, I would try putting some witch hazel on her first and see if that alleviates the problem. But it sounds like she needs to see a vet and perhaps have a skin scraping done to find the problem.
There’s a lot to be said for letting a traumatised kitty find their own way to trusting humans. Reese is beautiful.
Thank you for your response. Took my Mercedes girl to vet yesterday. She has allergies and dr. gave her a steroid shot. Because she has been losing her hair since January, it had gotten to the point where she was acting crazed because the itching was becoming painful for her. Poor baby girl. Vet said I should start seeing results within 5 days. Wow! Overnight, no acting crazy, no obsessive grooming. Thank you God.
