Well I took the new cat to the vet and weighed him 18 pounds! They checked for a chip and found one. I was so elated thinking that someone was frantically looking for him. Well, they don’t want him. This is this 5 year old’s history:
Purchased along with his brother at a local shelter at 3 months old. Declawed at 6 months old (both kittens) happened along with the neuter. Kicked outside because of behavior issues- (brother is still living outside) The cat was then given to a friend because “she just fell so much in love with him! He is such a beautiful cat, such a love, so friendly..” when she wound down I asked- “Do you want him back?”
No hesitation in her voice “No.”
Apparently after he was given to someone who “fell in love with him” she in turn gave him to another friend so he could be a barn kitty. A declawed cat as a barn kitty? I just want to smack someone!
“He wanders” she said.
People just stun me- they simply do. I brought “Bentley” home and he is now upstairs and he is decompressing poor kitty. He is a very vocal kitty, earlier, he was curled into a very small ball on my lap and he was sleeping, but he was crying at the same time. I am going to give him a few days to adjust then put an ad in the paper and see if I can find a special home for this beautiful boy.
He’s delightful! I can’t imagine putting a de-clawed cat outside, although I know they love to go outside… We do take our de-clawed male (got him that way from a shelter) out once in a great while. He loves to smell everything and look around, but then it’s a hassle to keep him from trying to run out everytime we open a door, so we’ve stopped taking him out — at least until I can get him a halter and leash! Good luck in finding him a good home. He is a beautiful cat.
I wonder what behavorial issues there are with Bentley that keep people transferring this boy from one owner to the next. Maybe that will become evident after he adjusts a little more to his new surroundings. He could be missing his littermate brother. For him to be crying while sleeping, that could mean other issues? Maybe health related?
So many times people are not willing to take the time to work with a cat to help them adjust. They just want the cat to be a “shoe-in” immediately. So frustrating!!!
He is such a pretty boy, probably more misunderstood than anything. But for him to land with you is a real blessing for him. I know you will do all the right things for him.
What is wrong with people?? Some of the stuff they do makes me nuts… If I lived closer I would take him! Thank God that he ended up with you! I know it’s more work for you~~ but so happy for him. He looks like a sweetheart. Keep us posted on his progress and good luck to you guys!! Take care.
We’re bothered with declawing in general. To declaw, then put outside, GACK!
How is Bentley’s brother doing? Any idea?
He is still apparently an outside cat. They fenced their yard and he sleeps under the porch with another cat. Don’t get me started on that subject!
As far as Bentley’s behavior issues- he is very vocal as are most Oriental breeds and he seems to (at the moment) hate any cat or kitten that gets next to him, but he loves our dog! She is yellow lab/Great Pyrenees mix. He literally tries to attack the cats through the carrier or the cage that I use for initial introductions. He was going to eat the wire when I decided to put him back upstairs. I just put him on Petfinders and my hope is I will find him a home where he will be the only cat. He would be an excellent companion that way.
I suspect that if he had his claws, he wouldn’t be quite so aggressive.
