Went and picked up the donation. One bag of dry food needs to be stretched to a weeks worth of food for the sanctuary cats. I don’t want to pull the food from the cats who only come out at night to feed- so now I need to make the feral feeding center raccoon and skunk proof. I know both wild critters mentioned can climb but they can’t jump. Am thinking of using slick plastic sheeting to protect the food trays. The cats will use their claws to find purchase on the slick surface, the coons and possums and skunks will slide off. (that’s the hope anyway).
Are the foods you have listed on your wish list your preferred foods? Or let me know whats best – I will order some from Amazon.
My preference for the cats is just Purina Cat Chow. What is being donated is Kit N Kaboodle which the cats don’t seem to care for. I have five bags of meow mix left over from the last donation- the one that just cut us off- but the cats won’t eat it. In my experience it is the dyed foods that they shy away from which is why Purina Indoor or Purina Cat Chow is better accepted. I know that many people believe that cats will eat anything- but these cats here- they never read that rulebook-
Is there any means by which you can trade cat-food with other rescues, or shelters, so as to have food that yours prefer?
I am sending 5 16lb bags from Petco (cheaper than Amazon) 3 Regular & 2 Indoor. It takes 2-5 business days & what with the holiday, you may have a week wait – but, it’s on it’s way. Have you thought of approaching the local scout troops – cub scouts, brownies, boy or girl scouts? School starts soon, so they will be meeting again if you have that in your area. Many years ago when I was involved in cub scouts, we did fund raisers for local charities – bake sale, car wash – or had everyone bring a can of ?? to pack night. Perhaps they could help.
I should add, it might involve you attending a scout meeting & giving a short talk on the importance of caring for animals to the children, but you would be great at that
Thank you for the food and for the ideas. I will pursue this. I did tell the store manager of the one that dropped us that she was making it much more difficult for us to do our job properly.
