Found out yesterday that a check written last week for the adoption of one of the kittens has not been honored. I got the letter from the bank yesterday. I called the woman but she is not returning my calls. I am left scrambling to cover the $30.00 NSF fee and the other costs because silly me, I still trust people!
Too many crappy people out there! I’ve donated some. Hope it covers that NSF fee.
I guarantee she was notified before you were that her check was returned NSF. I hate that you’ve been left with this mess. I know that’s not what you need right now. Hopefully the kitty is ok.
No more cheques! You should run your payments on a cash-basis. It may be more inconvenient, but in the long run, it’s inconvenient for the thieves. Everyone can get cash, even if they have to wait for a bank to open.
Perhaps you should leave a message with the woman that the police will be contacted with a view to fraud.
I talked to my bank and their recommendation is that all checks from unknown people should be put into our savings account first and then wait for the 5 business days to see if it is good. I do get some donations on a regular basis and I know the checks are good to go. I don’t want to insist on cash because frankly not many people carry cash these days. I still haven’t heard back from the woman and I did go to the police about the bad check.
Your bank’s advice is good, but does that include not handing over a cat until the cheque has cleared?
