Update about black cats and other news-

Spent four days along with Melissa from the coast trapping the black cats and thanks to Kentucky Fried Chicken I am happy to say all the cats are captured and have been transported to the coast. Ocean living, what cat wouldn’t love that? All the fish you can eat! Melissa gets her fish straight off the fishing vessels as they dock. She says her cats all love sushi!

Here is our next project which I will be tackling probably by myself as other rescues when asked are just to busy to help. But here are some of the cats from the feral kitten colony. The adults are going into heat right now, so time is of the essence or more inbreeding is going to occur.

These are the older ones, the kittens are skittish and they hide quite effectively. I will try to put their photos up because they are real cutiepies. the beautiful orange tomcat met his end on the road a few days ago. I moved him off the highway early in the morning on my way to town. I wondered if it was the tom from this colony and according to Wes the caretaker, they aren’t seeing the tom right now. Since the girls are in heat, I suspect the Tom I moved off the road is the same one I saw the first day I visited the colony.

  1. The poor tom. He was so close to rescue. The other ones are in good hands now, though, even if it’ll be a hurry to catch them all. I assume the kittens aren’t a worry in regards to reproduction at the moment?

  2. I am constantly amazed at your energy level. When your blogging stopped for four days, I thought, “Well, she is getting a little well deserved rest or catching up on housework.” And here you were, off rescuing, not one but two, colonies of feral cats. Truly astounding.

  3. The need here as in most places is great. The kittens have a chance a real shot at a home if we can trap them fast enough and move a few at a time here for socialization.

Don’t get me wrong folks, in the four days of trapping, I had a lot of time to think about things. You have to have a lot of patience when trapping the seniors. They have been around a long time and know all the tricks. I thought about just walking away from rescue and concentrating on Mike and his upcoming challenges. But when I talked to Mike about my decision, he convinced me to stick with it pointing out that the caretaker had called everyone in rescue and no one had stepped forward yet to help maintain this colony. He didn’t call me- but thanks to Brandi, I stumbled onto this great need.

I don’t have enough traps to get everyone all at once so we are going to be sneaky and use cat carriers. It’s better for the cats, not so for the vets who have to neuter because carriers don’t give you a clear shot at the cat to sedate them. Over the years, I have lent out my traps some come home others just get “lost.” I have five traps now and that is it.
