Last night sometime, a car hit a skunk on the road in front of our home. It apparently lost its tail in the collision and made it off the road and died under my car. 🙁 It is always so sad to see wildlife die on the road or on the side, but this enterprising girl, I think was one of the five who I saved years ago). She comes “home” every year to have her babies which is a skunk’s way. So, she crawled under the comfort of my car and passed away. The smell was tremendous and when I hit the front door this morning, I was bowled over by its intensity. With eyes watering, I followed the source of the smell and found her gone. I had to get her out from under my car and put her in the ditch on the other side of the road so the raptors would find her. I smell terrible- my car reeks- our carport smells. Eight showers later- I still smell her lingering odor. Thankfully, the barn cats kept their distance and Brandi was in the house so she died in peace. Poor girl. I looked for babies, but they hide them so well and there are so many blackberry bushes right now in our back pastures, I doubt I could find them. Thank God for Nature’s Miracle because I am here to tell you that tomato juice does not work.
Try Hydrogen Peroxide…
Many years ago a cougar took down a deer in the our back 40. the death screams woke us up and scared the living-crap out of us. Next night coyotes came and finally the vultures. Sometimes that natl geographic-ish stuff isn’t go great. Just sad. Roads are heck on the wild life here, too. 30 mile commute thru orchards on Monday morning is, well, just sad too.
oh dear, didn’t mean to sound so dark. These days, I slow down and share the road with wild life.
I remember your tales and pictures of the little skunk family! Has it really been so long ago? Poor little skunk, I hope she didn’t suffer long.
